PCD is an inherited disorder causing defects of motile (moving) cilia. Motile cilia are needed to keep your lungs, sinuses, and ears free of organisms and debris that can cause infection and disease. A person with PCD experiences chronic, recurrent infections in the lungs, ears, and sinuses due to the loss of ciliary activity in those areas.
PCD also affects the placement of internal organs. Some patients are born with complete organ reversal, while others are born with other abnormalities or dysfunctions. Some PCD patients may also have infertility issues.
